8510 - WELLNESS
The Union-Scioto Local School Board is committed to
providing a school environment that enhances learning
and development of lifelong wellness practices;
therefore establishing a long term goal of promoting
health and wellness for staff, students and families.
In accomplishing the goals stated herein, neither the
Board nor the Health and Wellness Team shall create,
promote or enforce guidelines for reimbursable school
meals that are less restrictive than regulations and
guidance issued by the Secretary of Agriculture pursuant
to Section 10(a) and (b) of the Child Nutrition Act (42
U.S.C. 1779) Sections 9(f)(1) and 17 (a) of the Richard
B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C.
1758(f)(1), 1766(a)).
A Health and Wellness Team will be established. This
team will be comprised of no less than nine (9) members
with representation from the: the school board,
administration, food service, students, parents and
members of the community and other school staff as
necessary, such as school nurse, health and physical
education instructors representing all grade levels. The
team will meet a minimum of twice per year. Team
functions will include: evaluating implementation of the
District Wellness Policy, setting goals, creating action
plans to support the established goals, reviewing
policies pertaining to wellness and safety and making
recommendations to administration and the Union Scioto
School Board of Education.
The scope of work of the Health and Wellness Team will
include:
A. Ensuring that Child Nutrition Programs comply with Federal,
State and local requirements, and ensure access to those
programs for all children.
B. Provide and promote sequential and interdisciplinary nutrition
education.
C. Provide and promote opportunities for meaningful physical
activity during the school day outside of the physical
education classroom.
D. Ensure that all school-based activities are consistent with
local wellness goals.
E. Ensure that all foods and beverages made available on campus
(including vending, concessions, ala carte, student
stores, parties, and fundraising) during
the school day are consistent with the current Dietary
Guidelines for
Americans.
F. Ensure that all foods made available on campus adhere to food
safety and security guidelines.
G. Ensure that the school environment is safe, comfortable,
pleasing, and allows ample time and space for eating
meals.
H. Provide guidance to administration and the school board on other
school health and safety topics as deemed
appropriate by administration and the
School Board. Other topics may include, but not limited
to, topics from the
current School Health Index.
